Ariel view of Middleham Castle, Wensleydale, the Yorkshire Dales

Castle Hill Middleham DL8 4QG

Middleham Castle

Middleham is an excellent surviving example of a medieval castle, with substantial 12th-century remains and later buildings which show the castles development into a high-status baronial residence. It is equally important for the many personalities associated with it, particularly the Neville family and Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later Richard III.

Best known as one of the childhood homes of Richard III, Middleham Castle dominates the North Yorkshire town of Middleham. From the core of its Norman great tower, one of the largest in the country, the castle developed under the powerful Nevilles into a residence worthy of a family who dominated English affairs for over two centuries. Richard, Duke of Gloucester (later Richard III) spent his youth at Middleham and it became one of his royal homes.

Muddy Boots Guided Discovery Walks

Our Partner, Muddy Boots can arrange bespoke guided walks starting and ending at The Wensleydale Hotel, which can be of a length and difficulty to suit you, but if you would like to really immerse yourself in the landscape of the Yorkshire Dales and explore some less well-known areas, try a private guided Discovery Walk.

The small team at Muddy Boots, based just down the road in West Burton, have designed each of the Discovery Walks using their in-depth local knowledge to ensure that you experience the very best of the Dales. Take the paths less trodden as you explore their favourite secret spots, uncover the stories and characteristics that define the Dales and, most importantly, have a fun day out!

The Discovery Walks are private for you and your group and are led by a knowledgeable local guide. They include a picnic of delicious local produce, a stop in friendly country pub or village cafe, or a visit to one of the Dales’ excellent food and drink producers. The collection of Discovery Walks includes:   ‘History, Mystery, Hills and Gills’,   ‘Reconnecting with Nature’,   ‘Sunset over the Dales’,  ‘Family Adventure Walk’ &  ‘Hill Tops and Train Tracks’.

Thorngill Stables Coverham Middleham DL8 4PJ

Middleham Trainers

The art of training thoroughbreds has survived for more than two centuries at Middleham, thanks mainly to the excellent facilities that have been developed on the local moorland that surround the town.

Middleham has established itself as one of the best training centres in the country with its extensive grass and all-weather gallops, along with its therapy centre. Having had more than 400 winners each year for the past 38 years, Middleham Trainers produce, on average, a winner every single day of the year.

The Black Sheep Brewery & Visitor Centre

In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery from reclaimed equipment in the very same town, Masham.
